I hear the call... and feel the tug....
Me and my family are relocating to Hawaii. We are a married couple with 2 small children (4 months and almost 4 years). I sew clothing and other goods and accessories, crochet, and spin poi. My husband is a carpenter with many years of experience. We play music, sing our own songs, dance, drum, and enjoy spending time in nature. We are a loving family and provide care and stability for each other. We are "green", we eat organic as much as we can and try limit our impact on Mother Earth.
We are planning to move to Hawaii in December and right now we're still open as to what island we'll be living on. It'll either be Kauai or the Big Island. I'm hoping someone can point me in some directions...I'm basically putting it out there expecting to receive all positive things.
We're looking for a place hopefully near a beach, bike riding distance would be nice. And somewhere bike riding distance to a Health Food Store. Truthfully, as long as I have electricity to sew, and my girls are warm, I'd be happy...as long as I can be in Hawaii.

Re: Moving to Hawaii
Sat, October 6, 2007 - 4:47 PMHave you been to either island yet? Which do you prefer?
On the Big Island the beaches are often many miles away from where people live. But you can look for a place near a beach if that's what's important to you.

Re: Moving to Hawaii
Sun, October 7, 2007 - 9:53 AMi'm moving to the big island in a couple of months (and close on my Property in 2 weeks).....but it has taken MONTHS of internet research, 2 trips to Hawaii (one just spent flying from island to island) and a lot of ..."oh well, we'll just see how it goes when we get there". i will also be living off the grid, 100%. there is a separate set of challenges that goes along with making that choice. oh, i'm moving with 2 dogs as well, one is a great dane. and THAT was NOT simple either. how will you move in December if you don't know where you want to live? let me know if i can answer any questions. -

That's great. That can be hard to do, but so much better for the environment. And who wants to support HELCO anyway! Congratulations on your new property!
I love the Big Island.

moRe: Moving to Hawaii
Wed, October 24, 2007 - 5:07 PMI would have to say that I agree with Levi and Christie: there are HUGE differences between Hawai'i Island and Kaua'i, and if you have never been to either, I don't know how to advise you. Hawai'i Island has its charms and its pitfalls, same with Kaua'i.
What I would advise is to delay your move until you can go and spend some quality time on each island. A friend of mine once did as you are planning (moved to Hawai'i with no previous experience there); she was overwhelmed, and returned within three months, disillusioned and broke.
Here are some reality bits, though, that you may not know about: life is _very_ expensive in the Hawaiian Islands, even a simple one. Rents are not cheap and food costs are higher than in the Bay Area. The school system does suck, and the medical system is not much better. Life can be beautiful there, but there is poverty in the native Hawaiian community, and there are ongoing incidents of animosity toward outsiders/newcomers/mainlanders.
I hope you accept that I'm not saying these things to spoil your dream. It's only that I love Hawai'i and the culture deeply and feel for folks who go there with no idea of what can be in store for them there.
Here's a suggestion: check out the online newspapers from each island (you may have to register, but I know there's a Hawai'i Island online subscription that's free; the "West Hawai'i Times" maybe?). Read them on a daily basis to get an idea of daily life there. That may help you decide where to investigate in person.
Good luck. -

Thu, October 25, 2007 - 5:55 PMPatR aka Naleilehua,
Thanks for your concern. I know about the natives and their animosity toward outsiders... I've friends who live there seasonally... I've been staying informed. I also have been checking out the news in Hilo and surrounding areas...
I feel pretty good about my decision to move to Hawaii... and if I have to leave to go make money and come back, so be it. But I'm not planning on it. I'm hoping I can get into the farmer's markets and sell my goods.
We'll see... definitely staying positive with an open mind... anything can happen. -

Re: Moving to Hawaii
Wed, October 10, 2007 - 4:18 PMThose two islands are so different from each other! Maui (where I live) is sorta a cross between the two. If you're considering Maui at all then Kihei is the only area where you can live near a beach and a healthfood store (Hawaiian Moons), not to mention the weekly drum circle at Makena beach.
On the other hand Maui's public schools suck (my son just graduated so this is firsthand knowledge speaking). There are some great private schools and good resources for home schooling. -

Re: Moving to Hawaii
Thu, October 25, 2007 - 5:47 PMSo, I have decided to head to the Big Island... we need a place to stay.
We are Zee and Matt with 2 small children (4 months and almost 4 years). We are looking for a place to stay on the Big Island somewhere in Puna would be ideal. We are willing to pay rent for a small hale or trade housing for work. I can help other mama's out baby sitting as well. We're open to temporary housing or something more long term. We have a dog and a cat and if possible, we would like to bring them out too.
Sending out positive energy... I know something great is going to happen.
Blessings,

Re: Moving to Hawaii
Tue, October 30, 2007 - 7:25 PMAll the best to you. Your positive thoughts will bring you what you need. I just read your note on your profile about moving to a place where freedom, love, etc. lives in everyone. I'd say a lot of us want to find that place, and it may be something we have yet to create, though it should be done anywhere and everywhere on planet earth. -

Re: Moving to Hawaii
Sat, November 17, 2007 - 12:21 PMI've been on Maui 15 years, this island is becoming a MAJOR RAT RACE! and it sucks.
Is there crime, yes, is it as bad as L.A. no, but I've heard about many killings here, and if you're white and you go the wrong places, then you better watch out, there is a lot of racism towards outsiders in Hawaii, because locals are sick of getting stepped on and pushed to the side as second class citizens when it's their home, and would you blame them for this attitude? NO, because a lot of the haloes from the mainland brought it on.
Molokai from what I have seen can really be down on white people after McAfee left the island with a bad taste for mainland america trying to move in and buy up the place.
I'm not trying to be negative here, life here is much better, but things are changing and getting crazier...
